Liverpool's success against Chelsea in the Carling Cup was somehow quickly forgotten as the fans, world wide received a bad news where midfielder, Lucas Leiva will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to a knee injury suffered during the tie.
The news was confirmed by the club on their official website, stating Lucas has suffered from ACL.
It's a massive blow for the player who has done so well. Lucas, heavily criticized have somehow became a very important figure in the team. Last year's Liverpool Player of the season has become an influential player where he was given the captain's armband in a league game.
Fans have expressed they wishes via twitter on his speedy recovery and hoping that he will return stronger.
Where will the team go from here?
I, as one of his loyal fans (I believed that he'd be an important player for LFC since day 1 I saw him against Everton) is gutted for this news. Never thought this could happened to him. But it is not the end of the world.
Many will start to wonder whether will the shape of the team be affected from this unfortunate event? Liverpool did struggle at the very beginning of the season. But I am seeing a more composed side for the past few weeks. Especially in the last 3 games against Chelsea and Man City.
I have to say Lucas is the best holding midfielder in the team, but we have others that I believe can do the job pretty well. Captain Stevie G should be back soon and we also have young Jay Spearing. These are the 2 players that I think could fit well as a defensive midfielder. The club has also recalled Jonjo Shelvey that will be another option in the middle of the park.
Previous seasons, when a key player was suspended or suffered from any injury we will be worried. Yes, Lucas Leiva is an important and a key player for Liverpool FC, but I am sure King Kenny will not allow the other players to dwell too much on his lost. Remember, no player is bigger than the club. Like the fans, the King will definitely feel disappointed with this lost, but I'm sure he has someone to replace Lucas.
The team is in a good spell. I'm hoping they will continue this run on the next league game. Whether Gerrard will be ready or not is still a question mark. I'm sure whoever plays in Lucas's role will be able to do his job pretty well ( I'm sensing that Spearo might get the nod, yet I may be wrong).
Let's win Monday's game for Lucas !! Another tremendous show from the man in Red ... YNWA !!
