LFC : Former Reds announced retirement

Former Reds Captain, Sami Hyypia just announced his retirement from professional football at the end of this season.

The 37 year old Finnish made the announcement at a press conference in Finland this morning. He will definitely be remembered by the fans after 10 years of glittering career at Anfield.

In a deal worth £2.6 million he was brought to Anfield by Gerard Houllier and he quickly established himself as Liverpool's center back partnering Stephen Henchoz. By 2001, he already won numerous medals among them winning a treble; League Cup, FA Cup UEFA Cup, and in addition winning UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. He was the automatic choice as captain until Steven Gerrard took over on 2003. His highlight career with the Reds were when he won the winners medal in the Champions League 2004-2005 season.

His professionalism will always be remembered. Jamie Carragher particularly would definitely pay tribute to Sami as he guided the Liverpool defense. He made 463 appearances for Liverpool and winning 10 pieces of silverware in his 10 years time at Anfield. What a record !!

He will now take up a place in the coaching staff with the Finland National team and will become the assistant manager at Bayer Leverkusen from next season. Maybe one day he may come back to Liverpool FC as one of the coaches.
